What is the featured artist project?

Monash Youth Services (MYS) commissions young artists to design and produce a mural on a feature wall located in the youth space at MYS.  This project celebrates Monash young peoples creativity, self-expression and storytelling through public art.

The design must be uplifting and youth friendly, whilst including the statement:

Monash Youth Services stands on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung People.”

The mural must be completed in chalk and cover a blackboard space of 4.9m (length), 2.5m (height).

All materials will be provided by MYS.

The featured artist will be compensated to cover travel time, and other associated cost with a $250 voucher at the completion of the project commitment.  Each mural is displayed for a period of 3 – 5 months, depending on scheduling decided by MYS.

Ronan Lee

"When conducting this mural for the Monash youth services, I wanted to focus on not only the text, but also what I feel that today's youth represents, which is diversity and mental well-being. A lot of the young people that will enter the youth centre will be in their very pivotal years of life and will go through a lot of mental and physical changes, thus wanted something that showcased that. Incorporating a lot of line and a lot of movement to convey a free feeling as well as adding birds and lotus flowers to symbolise self-discovery."

Andrea

Andrea is a , self-taught artist and Monash Youth Service’s Featured Artist.

As a high school student, my journey into the realm of art began with a simple YouTube tutorial: "How to draw Elsa." Little did I know that this tutorial would be the catalyst for my everlasting passion for art. From that moment on, art became more than just a hobby; it became my solace, my escape from the relentless stress of the pressures of academic life, particularly as I delved into the exhausting demands of VCE. So, when the opportunity arose to create a mural at Monash Youth Services, I was filled with utmost excitement and gratitude. Undertaking this project, from conception to completion, has been nothing short of therapeutic. Thank you to Monash Youth Services for this invaluable opportunity!

Ella Zhi

Ella Zhi is 18 year old, self-taught artist and Monash Youth Service’s Featured Artist.

"I have always loved creating art and drawing, I started taking it more seriously about two years ago in and now I am hoping to become a tattoo artist! Currently, I’ve been working on a portfolio to find an apprenticeship and have an art account @ezhitattoos on Instagram to document my journey. I take every opportunity to try something new in my artworks and always experiment with different mediums, so working on this chalk wall mural with the help of my partner was an awesome experience - especially as I love the youth space here. Thank you to Monash Youth Services for this opportunity."

Nivedha Ramanathan

Nivedha Ramanathan is 14 year old, self-taught artist and Monash Youth Services first Featured Artist.

“I’ve been doing different types of art for most of my life ever since I was 6. At 10 I started to explore the use of digital art, and started to recieve opportunities to share my work with the community. The first piece I shared was a custom book cover for a short story author in England in 2021, and another for my year 6 teacher, which was a drawing of her two dogs.”

Nivedha has lived in Monash since her family migrated to Melbourne in 2011 and is a member of Monash Youth Ambassadors.
